Want to create a Sacred Space in your home? Wondering where to start? I've put together a list and some ideas to hep get you started.

I was inspired to share this after a few conversations with beautiful souls at our last Guided Soul Retreat about finding the time and space to devote to daily practice. Family life can be loud and busy, it seems to be a common theme, but where and when do I meditate?

Enter a divinely Sacred Space or Altar in your home.

For me personally I found that I was able to commit to my daily practice (with joy) when I created a sacred space in my home, a place that I could retreat to for meditation, to journal or to just be. It’s a beautiful place for ritual and prayer.

Every religion has their own form of an Altar, a place to connect to your spirituality, connect with source, God, Buddah. From gardens, temples and churches to a sunny spot in your lounge or spare room. It doesn’t have to be grand in stature, but it should be sacred to you.

If setting up an Altar feels like something you’d love to do I invite you to read on as I share a few things on my Altar and a guide on creating this sacred place in your home…

Where will I set-up my Altar?

Mine is in my office/spare room. I have it set-up on my camphor chest that I’ve owned since I was a child, covered with a vintage runner with roses on it. You could find a cosy nook in your lounge-room, office, bedroom, your favourite chair or even bathroom, it could just be a little tray that you carry around the home with you. I like to make sure it’s clear of clutter and mess, my family all gravitate to this area for quiet time.

What goes on my Altar?

I have my Grandmother’s engagement ring, my Nana’s crystal bell, rose quartz Ganesh, essential oils, mala beads, rocks, shells and feathers from my boys, crystals, flowers and herbs from my garden, oracle cards and a candle.

I put things there that are sacred and special to me, it changes over time.

Here’s a list of items you might lie to choose for your Altar:

Sacred Items

Like I mentioned above these are items that are sacred to you, like photos, jewellery or even a pen passed down to you from a Grandparent. If the item brings you feelings of love, joy, peace, inspiration or celebration it’s going to raise your vibration to your higher self.

The Five Elements of Nature

Deepen and harmonise your connection to nature by placing flowers in a vase with water, plants, crystals, candles.

Something for the Senses

A beautiful Altar for the eyes, essential oils or incense for the nose, a bell for the ears, a soft cushion or blanket for touch and a sweet tea or cacao for taste.

Murtis

Represent the qualities that you’d like to cultivate in yourself with murtis (statues) of the deities. These statues can come from any religion or culture as long as they mean something to you.

I have Ganesha, remover of obstacles and a women in prayer. You might like to choose Lakshmi (the Hindu Goddess of abundance), and Hanuman for his devotion and love. In Tantric philosophy, the deities aren’t considered anything outside of you, but personify energies we feel but never thought to invoke or name. Quan Yin is the Buddhist Goddess of compassion, for example, and can help you manifest empathy and love within your own heart. Whatever calls to you is meaningful.

Mala or Prayer Beads

I hang mine on my murtis when I’m not using them, it keeps them sacred and adds to the beauty of this space.

Oracle Cards or pieces of Art

Oracle cards for guidance and clarity and art will invoke feelings of inspiration, love and beauty.

Sacred Texts

This might include your Bible, The Yoga Sutras or A Course in Miracles. The study of self through sacred text can be an important part of your daily practice.

Journal

Writing future memories, scribing the downloads and guidance you receive during mediation is a powerful manifestation tool. For this is your higher self communicating with you.

Photos

Some people like to keep photos of teachers, Gurus, children, ancestors or other inspiring people in their lives. This can really help you to bring you to a state of oneness and honour them.

Remember an Altar in your home is just another beautiful part of the decor until you infuse energy, intentions, practice your rituals and pray there. So enjoy the process, get creative and let the sacred around you reflect the divine feminine within.

I’d love to hear in the comments if you’ve got a sacred space or are inspired to create one?
